LIGHT A PATH FOR THE INCARCERATED
Light a Path for the Incarcerated brings yoga and mindfulness practice to one of our region’s—and nation’s—most overlooked populations. Men and women in the criminal justice system are often affected by physical and psychological trauma. This trauma is aggravated by the many daily stressors of incarceration. In our weekly yoga and mindfulness class, we seek to equip inmates with tools to find safety in their own bodies, which many have grown to distrust, abuse or neglect. An ever growing body of research shows how yoga programs in correctional facilities can lower recidivism rates. By providing yoga to residents of correctional facilities, we work toward making our justice system restorative rather than retributive, so that together we strengthen the well-being and resiliency of our communities at large.
